image about Fluid

Fluid is a grand and modest duet for breakdance and Indian singing (performed live).

This duet is danced by break dancer Denden Karadeniz accompanied by live vocals by the Indian Shashwathi Jagadish in a composition by Simone Giacomini.

Kalpana plays with breakdance and urban techniques and cleverly with Indian elements. Fluid is about the tension between different energy flows and associated emotions such as vulnerability versus strength. For this Kalpana is inspired by god Shiva in the form of Ardhanarishvara: a form in which he is half man (Shiva) and half woman (Shakti).

Kalpana Raghuraman About Fluid:

"Denden is an exceptionally talented dancer who is enormous and embodies a roughness but also has something vulnerable and transparent. This intrigued me; how could I maintain that strength while also making room for that vulnerability.

I haven't worked with Indian singing for a long time and this seemed like a perfect opportunity. Breakdance with Indian singing by Shashwathi who is small in her physics but also expands power in her singing. I have been working with Simone for years and he knows better than anyone how to combine Indian elements with contemporary music. What I do with movement, he knows how to do with sound in his own way. "

This duet can be booked separately (duration 18 minutes) and also in combination with a second duet: Tara

"thanks to a smooth audiovisual plan the formal conversation between the two artistic mediums was more than enough to get us caught up in a cosmic sense of the moment. Tara feels like a well planned and studied improvisation, where both performers have had the time to get to know each other, slowly developing an evocative way of playing together as they individually excel in their technical abilities. The attention to the precision of her moves and the swift contrast between sharpness and fluidity in her body render Panday fascinating to watch, the intricacy of the rhythms she counteroffers to Haanstra’s looped game of bass-guitar a labyrinth of its own.
From my white, western, new-to-Indian-dance-languages critical vantage point I will venture to say that Raghuraman succeeds at what I read to be one of her company’s main aims: “to uncover the mystical and multifaceted nature of countless Indian sources in a way that speaks to us today”.
