In Two Minds

In Two Minds

A musical dance performance about power, manipulation and submissiveness.

“True power doesn't require arrogance, a long beard and a barking voice. True power strangles you with silk ribbons, charm and intelligence” – Slavoj Žižek, Slovenian filosopher

Humans have a thirst for power. While one wants to influence the other, many seem willing to take on the role of follower. Our society and relationships are imbued by it, often without us being aware of it. The Indian teacher-student relationship is an apt example of this.

In “In Two Minds”, Kalpanarts explores the principles of power and manipulation.

The strategies of the ruler and follower are complex, but also awfully simple. The five dancers and two musicians make this tension tangible.

Kalpanarts was inspired by Bikram Choudhury, Mata Hari, Mao Zedong and Donald Trump.

“Mata Pita Guru Deivam”

Sanskrit verse from the veda’s; Indian scriptures

(translation: Mother, Father, Guru, God)

Live music with cellist Maya Fridman (Russia), and daf player Farid Sheek (Iran).

‘Horizontal airflips and other urban moves are combined with gracefully twisted wrists and drumming feet from the Kathak and Bharatanatyam. The result is a dynamic dance form that has theatrical expressiveness and is beautiful to look at.’ — Trouw
