‘The typical poses of the Indian dance show seem to make statements about all the other poses
that a woman is supposed to assume. The work has a sacred side, but at the same time it is contemporary;
This woman demands a place in this world.’
– Kalpana Raghuraman
In cloud of incense we see a dancer on cowboy boots. She dances wildly and tenderly.
With Kiss of Life Kalpana offers an alternative to the role models that today's Indian woman faces: the pious introvert woman, or the Indian version of Barbie. The 'Black Goddess' Kali offers results. She is wild and turbulent, but at the same time gentle and tender.
In Kiss of Life, Kalpana’s particular dance style is interpreted by Canadian performer Sabina Perry.
